Ahsen Ebru Gum Tragacanth – Natural Thickener for Ebru Marbling Size – 250 g
Gum tragacanth is a natural plant gum obtained from the tragacanth shrub (Astragalus), which grows in the mountainous regions of Anatolia. In the art of Ebru (Turkish paper marbling), it has been used for centuries as the traditional material for thickening the water in the marbling tray. It allows the colours to spread on the water surface in a controlled way without bleeding, keeping the patterns crisp and clear.
The gum tragacanth offered by Ahsen Ebru Sanatı is natural and unprocessed. As a natural product, the colour of the pieces may vary from light yellow to amber, and plant residues may be present. This does not affect its performance in the marbling size. We recommend sorting out dark pieces and residues before soaking.
Preparing the Marbling Size
Place the gum tragacanth in a container, add enough water to fully cover it and let it soak for 2–4 days, stirring occasionally. Once it has swollen to a gel-like consistency, break it up and strain it through a fine cloth. Dilute the strained gel with water and adjust the consistency to suit your own working style and the paints you use. To keep the marbling size usable for longer, a suitable preservative can be added.
Other Uses
Besides Ebru, gum tragacanth is used in a variety of other fields:
- In paper and book arts as an adhesive and thickener
- As a binder in making watercolours and pastels
- In leatherwork for edge burnishing
- In fabric printing as a thickener for dyes
Storage
Store in a dry, cool place in a tightly closed container, away from direct sunlight.
